There are lots of Gadget (widgets) that may/may not be helpful to you. On Blogger, you go to Design, then click on "Add gadgets". A list will come up, and you can click and drag them where you'd like. Useful ones might be search bars, RSS feeds, followers (in Blogger), pages, Links (lists of links that are helpful to students/families).
RSS Feeds come from a variety of companies. We've got the RSS Feed from Epicurious, Health Canada, and Burdastyle. They give rolling updates of information. Hey! I just figured out how to do it on my school one! I believe the teacher just became the student..........
